Mammoth Cave – Ancient Giants Beneath the Forest

Mammoth Cave entrance surrounded by karri and marri forest

Deep beneath the karri and marri trees in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park lies Mammoth Cave—a vast limestone cavern that once housed the ancient bones of Australia’s megafauna. Towering chambers, natural formations, and a sense of timelessness make this one of the most immersive cave experiences in the region.

A Natural Time Capsule

Mammoth Cave is more than 500 metres long and descends 30 metres below the surface. Along the trail, you'll encounter fossils embedded in the cave walls, including a remarkable 50,000-year-old jawbone of a zygomaturus—a giant, wombat-like creature that once roamed this land.

This cave offers a unique window into Australia’s prehistoric past. It's a walk through deep time, where every step reveals stories etched into stone.

Self-Guided Audio Tour

You can explore the cave at your own pace with a self-guided audio tour, available in English, French, German, Malay, and Mandarin. Collect your MP3 player and headset from the visitor centre, then make your way through the cave on a gently sloping boardwalk and series of stairs that lead you deeper into the caverns.

Marvel at stalactites and stalagmites, and if you visit in late winter or early spring, you may even see the seasonal stream flowing through the cave floor.

Forest Walk Exit

The tour exits into a peaceful forest setting. Follow the trail through the marri and karri trees to complete your journey. It’s a gentle, grounding way to reconnect with the surface world after your underground adventure.

Helpful Tips

Stalactites and rock formations inside Mammoth Cave

Dress for cool temperatures—caves are naturally cooler than the outside environment, so it’s a good idea to bring an extra layer and water. The walk is comfortable but includes steps, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

Please watch for children on the final stretch through the forest, as there is one road to cross before returning to the car park.
